What's included in the insurance cover?
Your MILES car subscription is covered both by liability and comprehensive-style insurance. Specifically, that means:
Motor liability insurance
Covers damage that you, as the driver, cause to other people, their vehicles, their property or their assets.
Cover for the MILES vehicle (comprehensive-style)
In the event of damage, loss or theft, your liability per claim is limited to the agreed deductible.
Unless otherwise stipulated in the terms and conditions, the General Terms and Conditions for Motor Insurance (AKB 2015) of the German Insurance Association (GDV) apply to the liability insurance.
Liability insurance in detail
If you cause an accident, the liability insurance covers the damage to the other vehicle or to third-party property. For damage to the MILES vehicle itself, you're only liable up to the amount of the agreed deductible.
Situation: You drive your MILES (VW Polo, category S) into another car. The other vehicle suffers €6,000 in damage, and your MILES suffers €2,000 in damage.
Result: The liability insurance fully covers the €6,000 for the other vehicle. For the damage to your MILES, you pay at most your deductible of €1,200 – not the full €2,000.
Important: The liability insurance doesn't cover damage caused by improper handling or incorrect operation of the vehicle – e.g. shifting errors, ignoring warning lights, refueling with the wrong fuel, or improperly secured cargo.
Deductible: your share in the event of a claim
The deductible is the maximum amount you, as the renter, bear yourself for self-inflicted damage to the MILES vehicle. It applies per claim and depends on the vehicle category:
| Vehicle category | Example | Deductible |
|---|---|---|
| Car category S | e.g. VW Polo | €1,200 |
| Car category M | e.g. Ford Kuga | €1,500 |
| Van category L | e.g. Mercedes Vito | €1,500 |
| Premium car | e.g. Tesla Model Y | €1,800 |
What counts as one claim?
The deductible applies per claim – that is, per damage event, not per damaged part. What matters is the event, not the number of damages.
- One event, multiple damages = one claim. If, for example, both the bumper and the headlight are damaged in one accident, that's 1 claim – you pay the deductible once.
- Multiple events = multiple claims. Each independent event is counted separately – even if they happen on the same day.
Situation: On Monday, while parking, you damage the front right rim on the curb. On Tuesday, on a different trip, you damage the rear right rim.
Result: These are two separate incidents – that is, two claims – and you are liable twice, up to the maximum deductible. If both rims had instead been damaged in one event (e.g. the same curb on the same day), it would be 1 claim.
Reducing your deductible (optional)
For categories S and M, you choose between three options when booking. The lower your deductible, the higher the monthly surcharge. The exact fee is shown directly on the website for each vehicle.
| Option | Deductible per claim | Monthly surcharge |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | €1,200 (S) / €1,500 (M) | included in the subscription |
| Reduced | €600 (S) / €750 (M) | small surcharge |
| Stress-free* *Not available for FLEX subscriptions. | €0 | higher surcharge |
Please note: The benefit of the reduced deductible only applies if all invoices have been paid in full.
Situation: Same rear-end collision as above (VW Polo, damage to the MILES of €2,000), but you've booked the deductible reduction.
Result: Instead of €1,200, you only pay your reduced deductible of €600. The monthly surcharge pays off especially if you drive a lot or mostly in the city.
When does the deductible apply?
For your liability to actually be limited to the deductible, two conditions must be met:
- Immediate report: You report the damage to the police (110) right away and call our support team.
- No breach of the terms and conditions: You haven't violated our terms and conditions while using the vehicle – e.g. no driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and no handing over your account to third parties.
Situation: Your properly parked MILES is damaged by another vehicle, without you or an authorized user being responsible for the damage.
Result – person at fault identifiable: If the person who caused the damage is known or can be identified (e.g. they leave their details or can be traced), your liability is waived entirely – you pay no deductible.
Result – person at fault unknown: If the person who caused the damage remains unknown (e.g. someone scratches your vehicle and drives off without leaving their details), you bear the damage up to the amount of your deductible.
Fault: The question of fault is determined exclusively by the police and the insurer.
When are you fully liable?
In certain cases, liability isn't limited to the deductible. You're then liable in full or in part yourself:
- Intent: If you caused the damage intentionally, there's no limit to the deductible.
- Gross negligence: MILES may reduce cover in proportion to the severity of your fault – the limit to the deductible can then no longer apply.
- Breach of the terms and conditions: Anyone who intentionally disregards obligations or prohibitions in the terms and conditions loses the protection of the deductible.
- Unreported damage: If damage isn't reported, MILES must bill the full amount.
- Unregistered drivers: If you let someone who isn't registered as a driver use the vehicle, you're fully liable – even if that person is known and has left their details.
- Fines & violations: You're fully liable for traffic and regulatory violations during your usage period (e.g. fines, parking violations, tolls).
Situation: Upon return, the inspector finds a scratch that you didn't report.
Result: Since the damage wasn't reported, it can't be limited to the deductible – you're billed the full repair costs. So always report damage immediately.
What to do in the event of damage or an accident?
We're available for you around the clock. In the event of a claim, it's best to proceed as follows:
- Secure the scene & help: First, make sure everyone involved is safe. If anyone is injured, give first aid and call emergency services on 112.
- Inform the police: Secure the accident site and inform the police on 110.
- Report to MILES Support: Report the accident directly to our support team. We'll tell you what happens next.
You'll also find our number on the business card in the car – it's best to save it right at the start of your subscription.
Important: Every accident must be reported so that full insurance cover remains in place.
Mobility guarantee
The mobility guarantee is an optional extra you can book during checkout. In the event of a claim, it provides you with a replacement vehicle for the period in which you can't use your subscription car.
Booking: only during checkout, not afterwards.
Replacement vehicle: a comparable vehicle from the car-sharing fleet, the subscription fleet, or an external rental – depending on availability and location.
Insurance & deductible at return
At the end of your subscription, an independent inspector from TÜV Süd checks the condition of the vehicle. A distinction is made between mileage-related wear and tear and damage beyond that.
- If damage beyond normal use is found, we'll bill you for the repair costs up to the amount of your deductible in the final invoice.
- The deductible applies to every reported damage or accident – per case.
- Extra kilometers driven beyond your booked package may be billed additionally.
- Final inspection at a TÜV Süd station: free of charge. Inspection at your home: €249.
